WHY WE LOVE THIS
The expert Letaka guides make this birding experience inspiring, educational and unique. Fascinating for any bird lover and guaranteed to make you want to come back again!
Our partners in Botswana, Letaka Safaris is a citizen-owned safari company that has been operating in Botswana since October 2000. The founding directors, known locally as the Letaka brothers, have almost 40 years of combined guiding experience and have been guiding mobile safaris in Botswana since the mid-90’s. Originally all Letaka safaris were owner-guided, but the company has now grown to employ a number of Botswana’s most highly experienced mobile safari guides.
Letaka Safaris was the first safari company in Botswana to offer regular scheduled birding safaris. The directors of the company are all very keen birders who have been birding since childhood and have close to twenty years experience in leading bird-watching tours around Southern Africa. Birding in Botswana offers the global birder the opportunity to go bird-watching in one of the world’s most pristine wildernesses where phenomenal wildlife and scenery add to the birding experience.
Some of the bird watching safaris which we offer are the following:
- The Livingstone Birding Trail – 17 days – Botswana, Namibia & Zambia – This is our most popular bird watching departure, we recently added on a trip to the town of Choma in southern Zambia where we go to find the Chaplin’s Barbet, Zambia’s only true endemic.
- Northern Wings – 12 days Botswana – The Moremi Game Reserve Exploring the fringes of the Okavango Delta by Mokoro, the freedom of the Khwai Concession Area, Chobe National Park and a boat cruise on the Chobe River
- Of Bats and Birds – 14 days Zambia – This once in a lifetime experience is a sight to behold – millions of straw coloured fruit bats, the Nesting Shoebill and the search for the elusive African Pitta. From Livingstone to Lusaka – a phenomenal 14 days
- The Shoebill Safari – 17 days Zambia – Our annual Shoebill Safari treks up through Zambia visiting South Kafue National Park, Kasanka National Park and the remote Bangweulu Swamps, home of the extraordinary Shoebill Stork. Our Shoebill Safari departs in May each year that we offer this trip.
Our partner organisation in Botswana is Letaka Safaris. Letaka Safaris is a citizen-owned safari company that has been operating in Botswana since October 2000. The founding directors, known locally as the Letaka Brothers, have over 34 years of combined guiding experience and have been guiding full-time in Botswana since the mid-90’s. Originally all our safaris were owner-guided but the company has now grown to employ 7 of Botswana’s most highly experienced mobile safari guides.
The focus of the company has always been on the quality of our guides, hence their close association with Okavango Guiding School, a training facility which we created to elevate the standard of guiding in Botswana. Many of Botswana’s top safari guides pass through Okavango Guiding School’s doors at one time or another and we are proud to continue this initiative to create a guiding fraternity that will stand head and shoulders above other African destinations.
